As I read through Mark 8, I am struck by Jesus' frustration with his disciples. He repeatedly warned them to beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Herod, but they did not understand. They thought he was talking about bread, not realizing that he was warning them about the impurity of man-made traditions and the hypocrisy of the religious leaders.
It seems that the disciples were unable to grasp Jesus' teachings, especially when he used parables to explain them. They were blinded by their own unbelief and lack of understanding.
Even after witnessing Jesus perform miracles, they still struggled to comprehend his message. Jesus had to remind them of the feeding of the 5000 and 4000, and yet they still did not fully understand.
One example of this is when Jesus healed a blind man outside the village of Bethsaida. Jesus had to led the man outside the village, away from the crowd. Jesus had to lay his hands on the man's eyes twice before he could see clearly. Jesus instructed him not to return to the village, which suggests that the man's blindness was linked to the unbelief of the people in that area. Also note that some of the desciples are from Bethsaida, (Peter, Andrew, and Philip) which explains their unbelief because of where they came from.
As I reflect on this passage, I am reminded of my own struggles to understand God's will and ways. There are times when I feel like the disciples, unable to grasp the depth and complexity of God's message because of what I already know (world knowledge). Like them, I can be blinded by my own doubts and fears because of the world norms and standards (yeast), and these can make it difficult to see God's hand at work. Believing the Word of God is a total renewing of the mind because what God says is often times very different from what the world says.
But this passage reminds me that it is essential to be vigilant and to guard against the traditions and norms of men that can blind us to God's truth. We need to stay focused on God's word and seek his guidance in all that we do. With faith and perseverance, we can gain a deeper understanding of God's love and grace and be transformed by his power in our lives.
