Lord, help my unbelief: Pathway to a Stronger Faith

As I was doing my daily devotion and reading Matthew 17:20, I couldn't help but ask the Lord why the disciples weren't able to cast out demons even though Jesus had already given them authority to do so (Matthew 10:1). As I searched for answers, I realized that the answer was actually right in front of me in the same chapter. Even the disciples were confused about why they couldn't drive out the demon (Matthew 17:19).

It was then that Jesus answered them, "Because you have so little faith" (Matthew 17:20). This phrase "little faith" is also confirmed in Mark 9:19 when Jesus referred to the disciples as "you unbelieving generation." Even the father of the demon-possessed boy had doubts that Jesus could heal his son, asking Him, "If you can do anything..." (Mark 9:22). The man later asked Jesus to help him overcome his unbelief (Mark 9:24).

It's clear that even if the disciples were given authority and the father had faith enough to bring his son to Jesus, they still couldn't cast out the demon because of their unbelief. So, how do we overcome unbelief? Jesus said that "This kind can come out only by prayer" (Mark 9:29).

Some versions also add "and fasting" (Mark 9:29 NKJV). However, it's important to remember that our faith, not our works, is what brings about change. Our works, such as prayer and fasting, do not change God or make Him do something. Instead, they help us change and overcome our unbelief.

As we face challenges and doubts in our lives, let us remember to hold on to our faith and seek God through prayer and fasting. It is through our faith that nothing will be impossible for us (Matthew 17:20).
