Have you ever received an answer to your prayers and then doubted God's promise? That's what happened to Zechariah in Luke 1. He had been praying for a son, and when God finally answered his prayers, he doubted.
In Luke 1:18, Zechariah asked the angel, "By what shall I know and be sure of this? For I am an old man, and my wife is well advanced in years." Zechariah spoke against God's promise and, as a consequence, became mute.
How should we respond when we receive God's promise? Mary's response in Luke 1:38 can serve as an excellent example. She said, "Behold, I am the handmaiden of the Lord; let it be done to me according to what you have said." She accepted God's promise without questioning it, and the angel left her.
It's also worth noting that Mary didn't tell anyone about the promise God had given her. She kept it to herself and only spoke praises and exhortations to the Lord. In contrast, Zechariah spoke against God's promise, which resulted in him becoming mute.
Therefore, it's essential to control what we say, especially when it comes to God's promises. We must resist the temptation to share them with everyone, as we could be the reason why our prayers have not been answered. Instead, let us follow Mary's example and speak only praises and exhortations to the Lord.
As Luke 1:20 reminds us, "And now you will be silent and not able to speak until the day this happens, because you did not believe my words, which will come true at their appointed time." Let us watch what we speak and trust in God's promises.
Remember, Proverbs 18:21, Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit and in Matthew 12:37," For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”
